The VLSI lab consists of computers and software tools for the design and test of highly integrated circuits (chips). In the multimedia lab, advanced programs for Computer Based Training are developed. In teaching, two VLSI design labs, a VLSI test lab, and a multimedia lab are offered. The labs are open for students of computer science and electrical engineering.

The SUN pool consists of two high-power servers UltraSparc, three additional servers SuperSparc as well as 10 X-terminals. The multimedia lab consists of 7 multimedia PCs as well as two notebooks and two projectors for the classroom. In the test lab a chip tester Tektronix LV-512 is applied.

The following VLSI software is used or developed further:

  • hardware description languages and simulators such as VERILOG or VHDL;
  • systems for automatic synthesis of integrated circuits such as SYNOPSYS;
  • for the domain above hardware desciption languages, the statechart-based graphical design systems STATEMATE and SPEEDCHART;
  • for the development of field-programable gate-arrays (FPGAs), among others development tools of XILINX;
  • in the area of multimedia, authoring systems such as AUTHORWARE.
